My church has been blessed with a new Music Director that happens to be a Cellist. Her husband is a Violist. I have always loved the vocal quality of both the Cello and the Viola. Inspired by Bach’s Cello Concerto, I decided to try to write a piece for the Cello. In doing so, I came up with two melodies; one in 3/4 time, the other in 4/4. Each seemed to go in a different direction, not just in terms of the time signature, but also the sound. The one in 4/4 seemed to be almost like a conversation. The melody unfolds in short, two bar units that repeat, yet modify, the one before them. That give and take reminded me of how we take turns talking, which inspired me to share the tune between two instruments, as if they were talking to each other, building on each other’s ideas and then coming to a consensus. The second section digresses from the original chat, as we often do in normal relationships. In the third movement the two no longer see eye to eye and a new tune develops in a minor key with a Tango-like feel. Then, they make up and return to the original dialogue and end up in perfect harmony.

It’s still in the development stage; not entirely sure about some of the harmonies or the transitions between sections, but that will come soon.
